On Waves, Lands and Margins. Metaphors and the Possibilities for a Feminist History of Literature

The rhythm of feminism as an emancipatory social movement can be mapped using the metaphor and dynamic of the wave: first wave, second wave, and third wave[1]… Needless to say, these waves describe the state of feminism in the United States and Western Europe, but apply to the Polish context as well – and my focus lies here.

The concept of the “constellation”, applied to literary and cultural studies[1] broadly construed, describes the relations that link ideas to things. In this context, the idiosyncrasies of things push back against universal tendencies assigned by ideas.

Funkcjonowanie krytyki literackiej po roku 1989 określane było przez wiele równoległych zjawisk, w tym: otwarcie na nowe sposoby czytania, związane z przyswajanymi wówczas kulturowymi teoriami; zwrot w stronę antyakademickości i prywatnego czytania; rynkowe uwikłania prowadzące do bardziej dziennikarskich niż krytycznoliterackich sposobów i gatunków pisania o literaturze; pojawienie się nowych, zakorzenionych w innowacyjnych formach medialnych obiegów komunikacyjnych na czele z literacką blogosferą i mediami społecznościowymi; kryzys piśmienności. The functioning of literary criticism in Poland after 1989 has been shaped by numerous parallel phenomena, including: openness to new modes of reading, influenced by cultural theories adopted at the time; a turn towards anti-academic and private reading approaches; market entanglements that led to journalistic rather than strictly literary-critical styles and genres of writing about literature; the emergence of new communication circuits rooted in innovative media forms, such as literary blogs and social media; and a crisis of literacy.
