Is Professor of English at Wayne State University, where he teaches modernist studies and poetics. He is the author of The Constructivist Moment: From Material Text to Cultural Poetics (Wesleyan University Press, 2003), awarded the René Wellek Prize in 2004. His essays have appeared in Critical Inquiry, Genre, Poetics Today, Modernism/Modernity, Qui Parle, The Impercipient Lecture Series, Postmodern Culture, Textual Practice, and Cultural Studies. Total Syntax, essay on modern and contemporary poetics, appeared in 1984. Other books include Frame: 1971-1990 (Sun & Moon, 1997). As editor, he brought out two journals of poetry and poetics, This (1971-1982) and Poetics Journal (1982-1998).
